Walk Description
Step 1: Start at the Tarn Hows Car Park
Begin your walk at the Tarn Hows car park, just off the road between Coniston and Hawkshead. From the car park, join the main path and set off clockwise around the tarn, keeping the water on your right.
Step 2: Walk Along the Western Shore
Starting along the western edge, follow the easy, well-maintained path. This section is shaded by woodland and offers lovely views across the tarn. It’s a smooth path, ideal for an accessible and leisurely stroll.
Step 3: Reach the Northern End of Tarn Hows
As you continue along the northern edge, you’ll find a few benches offering quiet spots to take in the expansive views across the tarn and toward the distant hills. Here, the path opens up, and the surroundings feel particularly peaceful.
Step 4: Optional Ascent to the Viewpoint
Just past the northern end, the GPX route veers leftwards off the main path through a gate to a scenic viewpoint. The path here is steeper and more rugged, so if accessibility is a concern, you may wish to stay on the main loop instead. For those taking the detour, the viewpoint offers elevated views over Tarn Hows and the surrounding fells—a rewarding spot for photos.
Step 5: Continue Along the Eastern Shore
Returning to the main path after the viewpoint, you’ll walk along the tarn’s eastern side. This section brings you close to the water, providing excellent reflections of the surrounding landscape. The path here is, again, wide and well-suited for all abilities.
Step 6: Complete the Loop Back to the Car Park
Following the path’s gentle curve back toward the car park, you’ll complete the circuit around Tarn Hows. Take a final look over the tarn before heading out, or explore some of the shorter paths branching off from the main track if you’d like to extend your visit.
