Walk Description
Step 1: Start at Derwent Water
The walk begins at Derwent Water, just outside Keswick at the National Trust Kettlewell Car Park. You’ll head north along the lakeshore path, taking in the peaceful waters and the dramatic backdrop of the surrounding fells. The path is straightforward and gives a fantastic introduction to the area.
Step 2: Walk to Ashness Jetty
Follow the path around Derwent Water to reach Ashness Jetty, a popular spot for photographers. This peaceful jetty juts into the lake and offers beautiful views across the water, making it a great place to pause and take in the scenery.
Step 3: Cross the Road and Climb to Ashness Bridge
After enjoying Ashness Jetty, cross the road and double back to begin a short but steep climb up towards Ashness Bridge. This charming stone bridge, surrounded by rolling hills, is one of the Lake District’s most iconic landmarks.
Step 4: Continue the Climb to Surprise View
From Ashness Bridge, continue uphill towards Surprise View. The path is steady, with some rough sections, but manageable. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular panorama over Derwent Water and the surrounding fells.
Step 5: Steep Descent to Lodore Falls
After taking in the views from Surprise View, begin your descent towards Lodore Falls. This section of the walk is steep and rocky, and some walkers may find it challenging. Take your time, especially if the path is wet.
Step 6: Arrive at Lodore Falls
At the base of the descent, you’ll reach Lodore Falls. This striking waterfall is at its best after heavy rainfall and offers a tranquil spot to rest before continuing the walk.
Step 7: Follow the Path Back to Derwent Water Car Park
From Lodore Falls, follow the path as it winds gently back towards the Derwent Water car park. This final section is mostly flat, offering a relaxing conclusion to the walk with lovely lakeshore views.
