Walk Description

Step 1: Starting Point in Grasmere Village

Begin your journey from Grasmere village, heading along towards the road that leads to Allan Bank - National Trust. Follow signs for Silver How, walking past Grasmere’s charming stone cottages and quaint village sights as you set off.

Step 2: Leaving Allan Bank and Entering Woodland

Just before Allan Bank, follow the well-marked trail to the right that takes you through a beautiful section of woodland. This area is sheltered and peaceful, with occasional glimpses of the surrounding fells through the trees.

Step 3: Gentle Ascent Through Trees

Continue through the woodland as the path starts a gentle ascent. This section offers shaded, scenic surroundings as you gain some elevation and head further from the village.

Step 4: Emerging from the Trees and Gaining Altitude

The path begins to open up as you leave the trees behind, revealing expansive views over the surrounding moorlands. It may be quite boggy in areas with the potential for a stream crossing. This can be quite tricky in periods of heavy rainfall so be careful. The climb becomes more noticeable here, with a steady ascent toward Silver How.

Step 5: Steeper Climb to Higher Ground

As the route becomes steeper, follow the rocky path leading up the fellside. Here, you’ll get impressive views of the Lake District’s iconic landscapes and potentially some local Herdwick sheep!

Step 6: Reaching the Summit of Silver How

Arrive at the summit of Silver How, where you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view over Grasmere, Rydal Water, and the surrounding fells. This is a perfect spot to rest, take photos, and soak in the views.

Step 7: Begin the Descent Towards Grasmere

Starting the descent from the summit, continue the trail leading away from Silver How’s summit.. The path still provides an amazing vantage point with views stretching out toward the Grasmere and Rydal Valley and Loughrigg Fell.

Step 8: Gentle Path Through Open Fellside

Continue along the descent, moving through open fellside and following a gentler path that gradually brings you further down from the summit. After about 20-30 mins you’ll then almost turn back on yourself and you’ll be heading in the correct direction back down to the village of Grasmere.

Step 9: Descend Through Woodland

As you near the end of the descent, you’ll again enter some wooded areas and you’ll walk alongside a dry-stone wall for approximately 1km. You’ll likely be surrounded by lots or bracken and various streams. It can be a little rough underfoot so do take care.

Step 10: Finishing in Grasmere Village

You’ll then finally go through a large gate onto the road (Red Bank). Continue along this back towards Grasmere village. Here, you can explore the village sights, visit St. Oswald’s Church, or stop by a local café to finish off the walk with a refreshment!
