High Dam
This walk, starting from the small village of Finsthwaite, is a real hidden gem in the southern Lake District. The route is gentle and takes you through peaceful woodlands before arriving at the picturesque High Dam, a quiet spot where you can enjoy the stillness of the water and the surrounding scenery. While the walk is fairly gentle overall, the ascent from the car park can be a little rough underfoot in places, so be sure to wear sturdy footwear.. Walk Description
Step 1: Starting Point – High Dam Car Park, Finsthwaite
The walk begins at the High Dam car park in Finsthwaite. From the car park, follow the signposted path into the surrounding woodland. The peaceful setting and well-marked trail make for an easy and inviting start to the walk, though the terrain can be a little rough underfoot as you begin your ascent.
Step 2: Ascending the Woodland Path
As you continue along the route, the path gently ascends through the woodland. The trail is easy to follow and the canopy of trees provides shade as you make your way uphill. The gradual climb adds a bit of adventure but remains manageable for most walkers.
Step 3: Reaching Low Dam
After the gentle ascent, you’ll arrive at Low Dam, a smaller body of water nestled in the woodland. It’s a perfect spot to pause for a quick break, taking in the quiet atmosphere before continuing your walk towards the main highlight of High Dam.
Step 4: Arriving at High Dam
A little further up the path, you’ll reach the serene High Dam. This beautiful tarn, surrounded by trees is a peaceful and less-crowded alternative to other popular spots in the Lake District. It’s an ideal place to sit, relax, and enjoy the views.
Step 5: Exploring the Loop Around High Dam
From here, you can take a leisurely loop around the dam. The circular path offers different perspectives of the tarn, with reflections in the water and lovely views through the trees. The path is flat and easy, making it accessible for most walkers.
Step 6: Descent Back to Finsthwaite
After completing the loop, retrace your steps downhill through the woodland and back towards Finsthwaite. The descent is gentle but can be rough underfoot, allowing you to enjoy more of the tranquil forest before reaching the village and car park at the end of the walk.
